ABC News 10: California’s Massive “Garage Sale” Takes Shape

The state of California is getting in on the act with what might be the mother of all garage sales. Forklift loads of “stuff” is getting set out for the great California garage sale. It’s not the first state garage sale but it is probably the biggest — with promises of great savings. “It’s a good opportunity for folks to come in, especially in this economy, and buy something they really need,” said Eric Lamoureux of the Department of General Services, which is conducting the garage sale. Lamoureux said buyers can expect credenzas for $40, maybe even less. Cell phones will also be at a fraction of the cost of new, while computers can be had for around $50 and Sacramento Kings bobblehead collections will also be for sale. Hundreds of cars are up for auction. Expect to pay between a $1000 and $4000 for most. While buyers will get a deal, officials warn there won’t be any test drives. Credit cards or cashier’s checks will be accepted for vehicle purchases.

Google Goes Digging, Twitter Search, Jing, Twhirl, Fontspace

freelinereport.com Google is about to get even bigger. According industry blog Tech Crunch, Google is finalizing a deal to buy social media powerhouse Digg. Microsoft, which is currently in the midst a three year advertising deal with Digg, attempted to purchase the site last year. A Microsoft takeover is still possible if the Google deal falls through, says the article. freelinereport.com While Microsoft continues to strike out in the mergers and acquisitions department, microblogging kingpin Twitter seems to have there game under control, announcing the purchase of the search engine Summize. The newly named “Twitter Search” does everything that Summize used to do, only under a different name. You might remember Summize from our report on May 5th. freelinereport.com Jing, a handy little program that gives users the ability to photograph and record their desktops, has recently turned one. And what better way to celebrate your birthday than to announce an affiliation. That’s right. The Jing project is now a part of SnagIt developer TechSmith. The Jing team is also upgrading its free storage space on screencast.com from 200 megabytes to two gigs. freelinereport.com What’s interesting about the acquisition is that Jing, SnagIt and Camtasia Studio all perform similar functions. Judging by the documentation available on the Jing website, TechSmith will be marketing the three
