This statue of J.P. Honus Wagner, located in front of the main entrance at PNC Park, was forged by local sculptor Frank Vittor in 1954 and originally dedicated outside of Forbes Field on April 30, 1955. It was funded with ,000 in private contributions raised by the Pittsburgh Professional Baseball Association.

When Forbes Field was demolished to make way for the University of Pittsburgh’s expansion, the Pittsburgh Pirates provided the funding to move the sculpture to the new Three Rivers Stadium, where it was rededicated outside Gate C on July 21, 1972. When PNC Park replaced Three Rivers in 2001, it was moved again, and today faces the site of Exposition Park, the Pirates’ original home from 1891 to 1909.

The 10-foot bronze statue rests atop a 7-foot granite base designed by architectural firm Mitchell and Ritchey. The base contains reliefs sculpted by Tony Vittori, Frank’s brother, who worked with the Pittsburgh firm of Carlini Brothers Monumental Works. The reliefs depict the "youth of today" and the "youth of tomorrow" looking up at Wagner.

Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner (1874 – 1955), known as "The Flying Dutchman," was born to German immigrants in the neighborhood of Chartiers, now part of the borough of Carnegie, in the greater Pittsburgh area. After breaking into the major leagues in 1897 with the Louisville Colonels, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1899, where he would spend the remaining 18 years of his professional career, leading the team to the the 1903 National League pennant and an appearance in the first World Series and then the 1909 World Series Championship. Wagner won eight batting titles, and led the league in slugging six times, and in stolen bases five times. He retired with a career .327 batting average and 3,415 hits. He served the Pirates as a coach from 1933 to 1951, and the #33 he wore as a coach was retired by the team in 1956. In 1936, Wagner was inducted as one of five in the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame, finishing with the second-highest vote total behind Ty Cobb and tied with Babe Ruth. In 1969, on the 100th anniversary of professional baseball, a vote was taken to honor the greatest players ever, and Wagner was selected as the all-time shortstop. In 1999, 82 years after his last game and 44 years since his death, Wagner was voted Number 13 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Players, where he was again the highest-ranking shortstop. That same year, he was selected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team by the oversight committee, after losing out in the popular vote to Cal Ripken, Jr. and Ernie Banks.

PNC Park opened in 2001 as the fifth home of Major League Baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates, replacing Three Rivers Stadium. Funded in conjunction with Heinz Field and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, the 6 million park stands along the Allegheny River, on the North Shore with a view of Downtown Pittsburgh. PNC Park, designed by HOK Sports Venue Event, part of the HOK Group, was the first two-deck stadium built in the United States since 1953. Seating just 38,496–the second smallest capacity in baseball, its intimate design puts the highest seat just 88 feet away from the field. Built in the style of "classic" stadium, PNC Park also introduced unique features, such as the use of limestone in the building’s façade, a riverside concourse, steel truss work, an extensive out-of-town scoreboard, and many local eateries.
